На острове Бали помимо грегорианского календаря существуют еще два — Сака и Павукон. Это собственная календарная система, которая вызывает у приезжих недоумение.

Сака

С календарем Сака все более или менее понятно. Он базируется на лунных циклах. Год делится на 12 месяцев, состоящих из 29-30 дней. Каждый новый месяц начинается на следующий день после новолуния (Tilem). В середине каждого месяца — полная луна (Purnama). Всем известный праздник Ньепи (Nyepi) — Балийский Новый Год определяется именно по этому календарю.

Павукон

Сложнее обстоит дело с календарем Павукон. Год в нем состоит из 6 месяцев. В каждом месяце 35 дней, что в общей сложности составляет 210 дней. Считается, что принцип нумерации дней в календаре Павукон уходит в тысячелетнюю традицию выращивания риса на Бали. Календарь имеет 10 различных периодов, которые идут одновременно. Каждый день имеет свое название согласно своей позиции в каждом цикле. Три цикла (3-Тривара, 5-Панкавара, 7-Саптавара) считаются более важными и имеют большое влияние на жизнь людей.

День рождения Балийцы празднуют два раза — по Григорианскому календарю и по Павукону. В последнем случае это личный праздник. Не принято устраивать вечеринку и принимать подарки.

Павукон устанавливает дату для многих из традиционных балийских праздников и фестивалей, таких как Saraswati, Pagerwesi, Kuningan и Galungan.
